Systematik
Die Familie gehört zu der Unterordnung Prostigmata, Infraordnung Eupodina, Überfamilie Halacaroidea. Die Familie ist in 14 Unterfamilien gegliedert. Weltweit sind 63 Gattungen und 1118 Arten bekannt (Stand 2011). (Zhang 2011) (Krantz & Walter 2009)

Beschreibung
Vertreter der Familie sind recht klein (0,2 - 0,8 mm lang) und wenig sklerotisiert. Sie besitzen 1 bis 4 dorsale Schilder und eine gestreifte Kutikula. Normalerweise sind 5 bis 10 Paare dorsale Borsten (Setae), 3 bis 5 Paare dorsale Poren und 1 bis 2 Paare dorsolaterale Ocellen vorhanden. Die Beine besitzen auffallende Klauen. (Krantz & Walter 2009)
Biologie
Meeresmilben sind vor allem in der littoralen Zone der Meere heimisch. Viele Arten sind jedoch von tieferen Zonen bekannt, auch vom mehr als 4000 m tiefen Ozeanboden. Einige Arten leben neben Schwarzen Rauchern. Mehrere Arten leben im Brackwasser. Etwa 60 Halacaridae-Arten haben auch Süßwasserhabitate kolonisiert, mehrere Gattungen leben in Flüssen, Teichen und unterirdischen Gewässern. Die Mehrzahl der Arten sind freilebend, diese fressen vor allem Algen. Einige Arten sind Parasiten von Schnecken, Krebsen, Schnurwürmern, Stachelhäutern oder Schwämmen. (Krantz & Walter 2009)

In Europa (auf dem Kontinent) kommen nach Datenlage dieses Wikis 8 Gattungen der Familie Halacaridae vor. Insgesamt, mit den in Meeren lebenden, kommen 33 Gattungen in und um Europa vor. (Stoch 2003) (Szalay 1964) (Green 1960) (Costello M. J. et al. 2008)
