Systematik

Beschreibung
Adulte Tiere: Mittelgroße bis große, meist rote Parasitengona. Die Körperhaare (idionotale Setae) sind setiform, lang und spitz. Gnathosoma kann nicht ganz ins Idiosoma zurückgezogen werden, nur die Cheliceren. Larven: Beine haben keine Trichobothrien. Tibia I trägt 2 (selten 3) ϕ-Solenidien (im Gegensatz zu Smarididae). (Krantz & Walter 2009)
Biologie
Larven sind vor allem parasitisch auf Gliederfüßer, wenigere Arten parasitieren Wirbeltiere oder leben frei. Adulte Tiere leben räuberisch. (Krantz & Walter 2009)
Lebensraum
Diese Milben sind gemein in Streu, auf Gebüsch, unter Baumrinde und auf steinigem Boden. Balaustium-Milben findet man oft auf Wänden, wo sie schnell herumlaufen. (Krantz & Walter 2009)
