Phthiracaridae gehört zur Unterordnung Oribatida, Infraordnung Mixonomata, Überfamilie Phthiracaroidea und hat 10 rezente Gattungen und 815 rezente Arten weltweit (Stand 2011). Früher gehörten einige Gattungen in der nicht mehr anerkannten Familie Steganacaridae. (Subías 2004) (Walter 2006) (Zhang 2011)
