Die Familie gehört zu der Unterordnung Oribatida, Superkohort Desmonomatides, Kohort Astigmatina, Überfamilie Histiostomatoidea. (Krantz & Walter 2009)

Beschreibung
Adulte: Die Cheliceren sind mehr oder weniger stilettförmig gestaltet und der bewegliche Finger ist reduziert. Die Pedipalpen sind ungewöhnlich mächtig ausgebildet und häufig haben sie am Vorderende fransenartige Strukturen. Diese benutzen die Milben zum Filtern von Flüssigkeiten beim Fressen (siehe auch Videolink).
Deutonymphen: schildförmig, mit Haftungsorganen an dem hinteren Körperende. Beinpaare III und IV sind oft nach vorn gerichtet. (Krantz & Walter 2009)
Biologie
Adulte Vertreter der Familie leben in nassen Lebensräumen und filtrieren Biofilme mit den einzigartig modifizierten Mundwerkzeugen für Mikroben und organisches Material. Die Deutonymphen heften sich an Insekten und Gliederfüßler, weil die typischen Lebensräume (Tierdung, Kompost, Tierkadaver) rasch vergänglich sind und mverbreiten sich auf diese Weise.
