Systematik
Die Familie gehört zu der Unterordnung Oribatida, Superkohort Desmonomatides, Kohort Astigmatina, Überfamilie Histiostomatoidea. (Krantz & Walter 2009)

Beschreibung
Adulte: Die Cheliceren sind mehr oder weniger stilettförmig gestaltet und das bewegliche Finger ist reduziert. Die Pedipalpen sind ungewöhnlich mächtig ausgebildet und häufig haben sie an dem Vorderende fransenartige Strukturen. Diese benutzen die Milben für Filtrierung von Flüssigkeiten und Ernährung (siehe auch Videolink). Deutonymphen: schildförmig, mit Haftungsorganen an dem hinteren Körperende. Beinpaare III und IV sind oft nach vorne gerichtet. (Krantz & Walter 2009)
Biologie
Vertreter der Familie leben in nassen Lebensräumen als Adulten und filtrieren Biofilme mit den einzigartig modifizierten Mundwerkzeugen für Mikroben und organisches Material. Die Deutonymphen haften sich auf Insekten und Gliederfüßler auf, weil die typischen Lebensräume (Tierdung, Kompost, Tierkadaver) rasch vergänglich sind und machen diese Verbreitungsweise für die Milben notwendig.
