Systematik
Die Familie gehört zu der Unterordnung Prostigmata, Superkohort Eupodides , Überfamilie Halacaroidea . (Krantz & Walter 2009)
Weltweit sind etwa 14 Unterfamilien, 50 Gattungen und mehr als 1000 Arten bekannt. (Krantz & Walter 2009)

Beschreibung
Vertreter der Familie sind recht klein (0,2 - 0,8 mm lang) und wenig sklerotisiert. Sie besistzen 1 bis 4 dorsale Schilder und gestreifes Kutikula. Normalerweise 5 bis 10 Paare dorsale Borsten (Setae), 3 bis 5 Paare dorsale Poren und 1 bis 2 Paare dorsolaterale Ocellen sind vorhanden. Beine besitzen auffallende Klauen. (Krantz & Walter 2009)
Biologie
Meeresmilben sind vor allem in der Littorale Zone der Meere heimisch. Viele Arten sind jedoch von tieferen Zonen bekannt, auch von mehr als 4000 m tiefen Ozeanboden. Einige Arten leben neben Schwarzer Rauchern. Mehrere Arten leben in Brackwassern. Etwa 60 Halacaridae-Arten haben auch Süßwasserhabitate kolonisiert, mehrere Gattungen leben in Flüssen, Teichen, unterirdischen Wassern. Die Mehrzal der Arten sind freilebend, diese fressen vor allem Algen. Einige Arten sind Parasiten von Schnecken, Krebsen, Schnurwürmer, Stachelhäuter oder Schwämme. (Krantz & Walter 2009)
Gattungen und Verbreitung
Die Familie ist weltweit verbreitet. 7 Gattungen sind in kontinentalem Europa heimisch, deren Verbreitung wegen Mangel an Literatur nicht bekannt ist. (Stoch 2003) (Krantz & Walter 2009) (Szalay 1964) (Green 1960) (Costello M. J. et al. 2008)
