Jantscher (2001, 2003): “[T]he only way to make a correct identification is a close investigation of genital-morphological characters.” Even then, “The examination of a large number of females showed that some examples of both X. audax and X. cristatus are more problematic, and not all females fit easily into one of these proposed groups owing to the extremely high variability of the epigyne and vulva. Characters can differ significantly from those described here, and in such cases an unequivocal identification remains questionable.” Azarkina & Logunov (2001): Females are “poorly distinguishable (almost indistinguishable”, “practically indistinguishable by epigynal variables”. “To reliably separate the species..., males are obligatory required”. Roberts (1985): “Unfortunately, not all specimens are entirely typical and the variability... can cause problems in identification.”

J: “closer investigation of ecology, ethology or molecular methods can be used in the future” A&L: X. cristatus records from Siberia are noticeably more common in steppe habitats than X. audax. R: X. cristatus “on bushes, low vegetation and in undergrowth”; X. audax “in similar situations... usually higher on bushes, gorse, and the like”. A: X. cristatus “among grass and moss in dry and in damp meadows”; X. audax “[m]eadows and groves, Calluna-stands, heathlands, dry pine forests.”

J: – A&L: X. audax: “[F]rom Iceland in the west through the temperate belt of Eurasia to Sakhalin and Japan (Hokkaido and Honshu) in the east.” Generally somewhat further north than X. cristatus, but broadly overlapping. X. cristatus “seems to display a Euro- Siberian temperate distributional pattern... limited ... to the east by Transbaikalia and Y akutia.” R: – A: –

J: “colour is highly variable and ranges from cream-beige to dark black-brown. The patterns of coloration also show great variability. The present study of about 700 specimens supports the idea that there is a slight tendency for X. cristatus to be lighter in colour than X. audax. Particular colour patterns, such as the wedge-shaped mark on the carapace, vary a lot and different types are not limited to one species.” “colour and colour patterns are not reliable diagnostic characters for the separation of the ... species” A&L: – R: X. cristatus: longer “central wedge-shaped marking”, that “ends in a well-defined darker point”. In X. audax “the markings are darker and more pronounced. The central wedge-shaped mark does not extend as far behind the eyes as in X. cristatus, and does not end in a well-defined dark point.” This character “seems fairly reliable”. A: X. cristatus: “Median band whitish, anteriorly with greyish shield-shaped marking with dark brown tip”, “Dorsum of abdomen with deeply dentated yellowish white median band, bordered by dark brown”; X. audax: “Coloration and pattern somewhat variable”, “Median band brownish anteriorly, tapering and yellowish white posteriorly”, “Dorsum of abdomen dark brown. Median band whitish and distinctly dentated.” While some aspects of these descriptions match earlier color distinctions between the two species, variation is emphasized, and color characters are not highlighted as separating the two species reliably.

J: “The median apophysis has proved to be variable in form and therefore cannot be considered to be a reliable diagnostic character.” A&L: X. cristatus “sharp ends of the pickax-shaped MTA almost equal in their length”; X. audax “different”. They do not cite Palmgren’s 1950 paper regarding the possible problems of this feature. R: “varies somewhat” but, together with the tooth on the median apophysis, “the best means of identification” (as illustrated). A: X. cristatus: “pickaxe-like median apophysis with unequal points” (“Points very unequal in length”); X. audax: “Pickaxe-like median apophysis with subequal points” (“points usually subequal in length”).

P: – J: X. cristatus: “The basal pointed tooth on the lateral apophysis of the palp is small ... and therefore easy to overlook”. X. audax: “The basal tooth on the lateral apophysis is sharply pointed and of considerable length.” A&L: X. audax has “the longest tooth”, compared to X. cristatus and X. pseudocristatus. R: Together with the shape of the T-shaped apophysis “the best means of identification” (as illustrated). A: X. cristatus: “Tooth below recumbent”; X. audax: “Tooth below upright”.

J: X. cristatus: “The embolus is long and the last third is quite thin and fragile. The terminal part of the embolus is divided into two short protruding parts: a broader shelf-like more proximal part and a longer and thinner tip at the very end of the embolus.” X. audax: “The embolus is long and the last third is twisted and broad... the terminal part of the embolus is mostly dark and slightly curved; the tip is blunt.” 4 A&L: Illustrated as diagnostic, but not discussed. R: – A: X. cristatus: “Tip of long embolus terminating on projecting and narrow tutaculum”; X. audax: “Embolus mostly ribbon-like, tip narrow and without loop”, “terminates on thick tutaculum”. Here the text seems to place greater emphasis on differences in the tutaculum, which no other author discusses, but the figures show the differences in the shape of the embolus tip correctly.

Weibchen

J: See male. (“Females cannot conclusively be identified by colour patterns.”) A&L: – R: See male. A: X. cristatus: “Median band yellowish white, anteriorly with greyish brown mark with dark brown tip posteriorly”, “legs light brown, streaked with yellowish white, spotted with dark brown”, “dorsum of abdomen brownish. Deeply dentated median band yellowish brown”; X. audax: Dark variety: “Median band dull greyish anteriorly with some darker dots. Whitish posteriorly”, “Dorsum of abdomen with dentated median band whitish and grey”, Light variety: “Median band with pale brownish grey marking anteriorly, whitish or light grey posteriorly”, “legs light yellowish grey”, “dorsum of abdomen with indistinct marks”. While some aspects of these descriptions match earlier color distinctions between the two species, variation is emphasized, and color characters are not highlighted as separating the two species reliably.

Epigyne

P: – J: X. cristatus: “The shape of the genital atria is smooth and the boundary with the surrounding area is distinctly defined, especially at their posterior margin. The median septum is also regular. Normally side plates are absent, but occur occasionally.” X. audax: “the shape of the genital atria is highly variable and can best be described as ear-shaped. The median septum varies, especially at the anterior end. This part sometimes resembles a cup or funnel, sometimes it is similar to the regular median septum of X. cristatus. Side-plates are often quite distinct, large and of dark colour. The posterior part of the genital atria is normally bordered by a transverse line beginning at the posterior end of the median septum and continuing laterally.” But: “In about 50% of all cases the removal of the epigyne [i.e., a vulva preparation] is necessary to achieve a reliable identification.” A&L: A morphometric approach based on quantitative measurements of eight epigynal variables shows very limited separation of the two species. About 50% of the specimens seem to fall within the 95% confidence region of the other species, and the differences in single variables are minimal (slightly longer and broader septum in X. audax (mean SL=0.23, SW=0.10), compared to X. cristatus (SL=0.20, SW=0.09). “The total percent of correct posterior assignments is 75.3%”, and this includes X. pseudocristatus, which is noticeably more easily separated than the other two species. Figures show an enormous range of variation in epigynal shape, in both species including forms that according to Jantscher would belong to the opposite species. R: The “way in which the septum curves around the anterior margin of the openings” distinguishes the species: “in X. cristatus the curve is smooth, but it is not so in X. audax”. A: X. cristatus: “Anterior atrial rim without tooth”; X. audax: “Anterior atrial rim with tooth”. Epigynal septum usually broader in X. audax than in X. cristatus, but epigyne greatly variable. (But note that Peter Jäger already in his diploma thesis showed that this character is not suitable for distinguishing the species.)

Vulva

J: X. cristatus: “the copulatory ducts are characteristic for this species. The horizontal duct is doubly bent at its most lateral position, located just anterior to the receptacula. Furthermore, the most anterior part of this curvature is situated at about the mid-point antero-posteriorly along the length of the vulva (i.e. at about the point where the epigynal grooves would begin on the ventral side.” X. audax: “The copulatory ducts are very simple with the nearly horizontal duct bending towards the receptacula. Normally they are restricted to the posterior third of the vulva.” A&L: “The female of X. cristatus is most similar (almost identical) to that of X. audax, with small differences in the structure of the spermathecae”, as illustrated. R: – A: X. cristatus: “Copulatory ducts elongate, reaching middle of receptacles”. X. audax: Lengths of copulatory ducts greatly variable. “Receptacles more or less segmented into lobes. Posterior lobes heavily sclerotized”.
