Systematik
Die Familie gehört zu der Unterordnung Prostigmata, Infraordnung Anystina, Hypordnung Parasitengona, Überfamilie Trombidoidea und hat weltweit 5 Unterfamilien und mehrere Gattungen, die als incertae sedis noch nicht zu Unterfamilien zugeordnet sind. Weltweit sind 25 Gattungen und 253 Arten bekannt (Stand 2011). (Zhang 2011) (Krantz & Walter 2009) (Mąkol 2007).
Die Familie wurde von J. Mąkol in 2007 revidiert, diese Seite enthält die neue Nomenklatur (und später wurde die Familie Podothrombiidae als Unterfamilie auch hier zugeordnet).

Beschreibung
Die Familie beinhaltet mittelgroße bis große, meist rote, stark behaarte Milben. (Krantz & Walter 2009)
Biologie
Die Larven leben parasitisch auf anderen Gliederfüßern, vor allem auf Springschrecken (Orthoptera). Die adulte Tiere findet man in sehr verschiedenen Habitaten fast überall in Europa. (Krantz & Walter 2009)
