Systematik
Die Familie gehört zu der Unterordnung Oribatida, Infraordnung Desmonomata, Hypordnung Nothrina, Überfamilie Crotonioidea und hat 9 rezente Gattungen und 161 rezente Arten (Stand 2011). In den neuen Systemen gehört die ehemalige Familie Camisiidae in diese Familie. (Zhang 2011)
Anatomie
Crotoniidae ist eine Familie primitiver, großer Hornmilben, meist mit schwach sklerotisierter Cuticula, die mit Bodenpartikeln verschmutzt ist. (Balogh & Mahunka 1983)
Rostrum ohne mediale Inzision. Prodorsum mit großen Apophysen (Vorsprüngen), von denen im Allgemeinen rostrale und lamellare Setae aufwachsen. Notogaster mit 15 Paaren von Setae, f2 fehlt. Setae auf Notogaster sitzen manchmal auch auf Apophysen. 9-23 Paaren von genitalen Setae sind vorhanden. Aggenitale Setae: 2 Paare; anale Setae: 2 oder 3 Paare; adanale Setae: 3 Paare. Beine monodactyl, selten tridactyl. (Balogh & Mahunka 1983)

Biologie
Vertreter der Familie (bis auf die Gattung Crotonia) sind parthenogenetisch. Männliche Exemplare existieren nicht. (Domes et al. 2007)
